Reading
A New Start on a New Semester
Now that winter break is ending, it is time to think about the coming spring semester. I’m looking forward to meeting new friends and teachers in a new environment. This time around I also want to be a better student and friend. Before that can happen, I’ll need to change a few things.
Thinking of bad habits and setting goals give me something to work towards. First, I make a list of bad habits that I want to quit to help me become a better student. After identifying problematic things I do, I try to find ways to stop them. Every semester, I try to focus on one or two bad habits to break. I also create a list of goals that I try to accomplish each semester. Having a few goals is always a good way to make me more motivated.
1. Why does Hojun want to make a few changes?
2. Why does Hojun think it is good to think of bad habits?
What are your goals for this semester?
page 20
So here are my lists. I’ll post updates now and then, so everyone can see how
I’m doing. I hope with your love and support that I’ll do away with my bad
habits and achieve my goals this semester.
Habits to Break
Procrastination - I get stressed-out because I put things off until I can’t afford to do so any longer.
Staying Up Late - I often go to bed late and get up late. This makes my mornings really busy while getting ready for school.
Being Unprepared - I feel left out of group discussions in class because I don’t spend
enough time preparing at home. It is awkward not to talk while people are actively
involved in the discussion.
Too Much Time on the Computer - I often spend too much time playing computer games. I must use my computer time wisely because gaming does not really help me reduce stress any more.
Unnecessary Cell Phone Use - I waste too much time sending text messages and
talking on the phone.
page 21
Goals to Achieve
Studying in the Library - It is a lot easier to study at the library with friends than alone at home.
Communicating with Teachers - Ask them more questions in class and talk to them
during office hours or through emails.
Time Management - Make the most of my time after classes and on weekends for
studying or outdoor exercises.
Better Note-Taking - The notes I usually take are missing many key points and this
hurts when studying for examinations.
Extra-Curricular Activity - Join or form a singing group. This will really help me make friends with people who are not in my classes.
Of course, it will be really hard to stick to my goals. I’ll make a strong effort though, to quit bad habits, and also to accomplish the goals I set. Now that I have made lists of all of my bad habits, as well as my goals for the semester, I
hope you’ll do the same. Believe me it really will pay off.

Your posting reminded me of my schooldays. At one time, I worked on a month-long project that required me to read so many articles. I managed to finish because I read several articles each weekend. I stuck to that plan no matter what happened. In the end, I finished that project and handed it in on the due date. It’s a nice idea to set goals, but planning and determination are very important, too.

Hi, there. I’m Juwon, a college student. I happened to see your blog, while
surfing the Internet. It reminds me of a similar experience I had years ago. Like
you, the problem I had was that I spent too much time playing video games. I
couldn’t stop playing them once I started. I was so obsessed with playing video
games that I even played them in class. Being addicted to just one thing tends
to be deep-seated and can be a bad habit, so it’s not easy to change. But I was
able to break the bad habit by managing my time better. In order for the video
games not to hinder your studies, you’d better not spend more than one hour a
day, playing them. In particular, playing games in class should be avoided. If you
have any friends who may need my help, please tell them to email me. I’ll be more
than happy to help them.
1. Which of the following is Juwon’s opinion?
a) Video games are addictive and must be avoided.
b) Playing video games shouldn’t interrupt your studies.
c) Students can do various kinds of activities on the computer.
2. Who is likely to send an email to Juwon?
a) a student who needs help using a computer

The Cone-Shaped Bag:
At the Start of School Life
On the first day of school, students in Germany are given a cone-shaped cardboard
bag decorated with drawings and filled with school supplies and sweet cookies. This
tradition of the “Schultuete” (school cone) goes back to as early as 1810 in Germany.
When the tradition began, parents were expected to hang the bags on a metal
“Schultuten-Baum” (school cone tree), for children to pick on their first day of school.
This tradition developed from the idea that when a tree grows fruits big enough to pick
every year, it is time for kids to go to school. The cookies in the shape of letters or
numbers in the bags were used to celebrate the children’s first tries at writing.
Nowadays, however, less and less cookies appear in the cone-shaped bags. More
practical gifts such as crayons, CDs, books and even clothes have replaced the sweet
cookies that are bad for teeth.
Q. Which of the following is NOT true about the cardboard bag?
a) The bags are given to children beginning their school life.
b) The tradition of the bags started in Germany in the early 19th century.
c) Parents were supposed to hang the bags on the school cone tree.
d) Teachers used to grow a cone tree for the parents.
e) Sweet cookies are not placed in the bags as often anymore.

It is most important to finish a project on time.
You should obtain knowledge about a project before you start.
You need to plan a thing carefully and be determined to carry it out.
Once you are involved in a project, you must not think of other things.
To complete extra work, you must save enough time for that purpose.

Treat Yourself on the Street!
As you walk down the street, the inviting aroma from the food carts makes your mouth water. You are inevitably drawn to the carts to satisfy your curiosity as well as your appetite. The closer you get, the stronger the smell gets.
People traveling around the world often come across such delicious street foods.
What kinds of street foods draw your attention? Here are some delicious street foods you will certainly want to try.
Hot Dog
The hot dog is widely sold from mobile food carts, trailers and trucks parked on city streets all over North America. These “hot dog stands” first started in New York City, during 1860s, when German immigrants sold hot dogs, milk rolls, and
salted cabbage from food carts. Today, passers-by are attracted to the quick meal at all times of day or night. Fifteen percent of the approximately ten billion hot dogs consumed by Americans are purchased from hot dog stands.
The popularity of hot dogs in the United States is attributed to the fact they are convenient to eat and easy to make.
page.42
Reading
Every major city in the U.S. sells a variety of hot dogs that differ in size,
shape, and seasoning. Outside major universities, office buildings and shopping malls you will find food carts with steaming sausages, warmed buns, and a variety of toppings. You can use pickle relish, spicy chillies, fried onions, and cheese to create your own hot dog. The best part of all is to eat it while you walk home or go window shopping. It is the perfect fast food for people in a hurry.
So, where did the term “hot dog” come from? It is assumed to originate from a cartoonist’s use of the term in his portrayal of a man who sold sausages at a baseball game. The vendor in the cartoon was supposed to be yelling, “Get your Dachshund sausages while they’re hot!” But the cartoonist couldn’t spell the German word, “Dachshund,” although he understood its meaning . a breed of dogs in Germany. Instead he wrote, “Get your hot dogs!” The cartoon was a hit and the term “hot dog” was born.
1. Why is the hot dog considered the perfect fast food?
2. Who coined the term,“hot dog”?
Why do you think the hot dog is so popular?

Ais Kacang
Ais kacang is a popular dessert served for people to quench their thirst in Malaysia and Singapore. This dessert is made of red beans and shaved ice topped with sweet syrup or jelly. It is usually served in outdoor food markets and in shopping mall food courts. The word “ais” came from the English word “ice,” and “kacang” means “bean” in Malay. It is also known as air batu campur, or more popularly as ABC. “Air batu” means “ice” and “campur” “mixed.”
Today, sweet-tasting ABC comes in bright colors with jellies, cream corn, chopped peanuts, and different flavored syrups. Another less common ingredient is aloe vera. This icy dessert is not only great after a spicy meal but presents an excellent way to overcome the hot and humid weather!

Harira
Morocco’s famous spicy bean soup, harira, is seasoned with ginger, pepper,
cinnamon, and lots of fresh herbs. Harira is most often eaten by Moroccans
during the month of Ramadan, the Muslim holiday, when people do not eat
meat, or are allowed to eat a little only after the sun sets. Harira is sold at
many food stands in night markets especially during Ramadan.
Harira can be also prepared as an ordinary Moroccan meal using a blend of
meat, chickpeas, and tomatoes. To enjoy harira your way, try any combination of dried beans or chickpeas, add it to different blends of spices, and let it sit for 24 hours. It tastes better if served with a large spoonful of chilled yogurt on top and lots of fresh crusty bread. Even when temperatures are 27°C at night, this soup is still best-loved by Moroccans. It’s spicy, hearty, and fragrant!

Pastel
No matter where you go in Brazil, you’ll probably encounter the Brazilian street food called pastel. Any small street food stand will have a deep fryer with these little square pastries puffing up in the hot oil. Pastel can be filled with delicious ingredients: white cheese, ground meat or palm hearts. And it is often served with freshly pressed caldo de cana . the sweet and thirst quenching juice extracted from raw, peeled sugar cane.
It is commonly believed that pastel originated from Japanese immigrants in Brazil, who adapted Chinese fried wontons to sell as snacks at weekly street markets.
Pastel is ordinarily sold at the entrance of street markets, a few blocks of neighboring streets close to traffic, or at the bus station. People often buy pastel at these places in the daytime because it makes for a quick, delicious and very cheap lunch that they can eat while shopping in the street market. This crispy pastry really satisfies your hunger!
1. What kind of juice is served with pastel?
2. What is said to be the origin of pastel?
Have you heard of any other Brazilian food?

The Best and Worst New Year’s Food
Each culture celebrates the New Year with traditional dishes like baked black-eyed peas in the United States or soba noodles in Japan. They are believed to bring people good luck and they help enjoy the coming New Year with friends and family. A careless selection of dishes, such as chicken or lobster, may hurt people’s feelings and can have negative influence on them for the entire year. In some cultures eating poultry is forbidden because it means that your luck could fly away. ⓓ Chicken, which often scratches backwards, is particularly avoided because it can mean the opposite movement for people who want to move forward in the New Year. ⓔ Similarly, eating lobster means bad luck since a lobster swims backwards. The color of food is another symbol of bad luck. For example, white means death in Chinese culture, so people should avoid eating eggs, tofu, or white cheese on New Year’s Day. Also, some cultures around the world
believe leftovers welcome in a great year. So, remember not to eat everything on your plate!
However, in certain cultures, being aware of unlucky dishes is as important as
serving the best ones.
Q. Where would the following sentence best fit?

My Plant Eating What?
One day, I ran across some plants that eat insects to survive. These plants,
called carnivorous plants, were not new to me since I had read about them in
books. However, I decided to study more to see if I could find something
interesting about the plants.
Carnivorous plants have the strangest adaptations to low-nutrient environments.
These plants obtain some nutrients by trapping and digesting various insects, and sometimes even small frogs and mammals. Insects are the most common prey for many carnivorous plants.
Normal plants absorb nitrogen from the soil through their roots. But carnivorous plants absorb nitrogen from the insect that gets trapped in the specially designed leaves.
page.64
Reading
There were more varieties of carnivorous plants than I originally thought. As I looked for more information on the plants, I found that growing them at home was not impossible. However, it wouldn’t be easy.
It is not easy to collect carnivorous plants from the wild because most of them are relatively rare. If you are interested in growing the plants, purchase them from an expert.
I doubted I could ever grow carnivorous plants. The good news was that there
were some plants that novices like me could grow easily. One of them was called a Venus flytrap.
A Venus flytrap is one of the easiest carnivorous plants to grow. If you wish to grow one or more, there are several important things you need to consider such as wet roots, high humidity, full sunlight, and acidic soil.
When you are given its bulb, plant it with the root side down so that the top of the bulb is even with the soil. Do not add fertilizer. Your plant will live longer if you transplant it into new soil every few years.
page.65
Reading
Fortunately, there was a botanical garden near my house and I went there to
see if there were any Venus flytraps for sale. A man working at the garden helped
me find one and gave me more detailed information about taking good care of
my Venus flytrap. High humidity and temperature control seemed to be very
important.
In order to provide high humidity for your Venus flytrap, plant it in a glass container with a small opening. You need to watch your glass container carefully.
In the summer, the temperature inside the glass may get too hot. If your plant dries up, then it needs to come out of the sun quickly. Just the opposite is true in the winter.
When it gets very cold, you need to move your plant away from the cool area or cover it at night in order to keep it warm and wet. However, your Venus flytrap will experience a dormant period in the winter, so it needs cooler temperatures and
fewer hours of daylight.
1. What did the writer learn at the botanical garden?
2. Why does a Venus flytrap need fewer hours of sunlight in the winter?
Have you ever visited a botanical garden?
page.66
Reading
I didn’t have a glass container, so I planted it in a pot and placed the pot in a
larger bucket. I partially covered the top of the bucket with a piece of glass to
keep air circulation close to the plant.
If you grow your plant outside, it will get enough insects to eat. When it rains, the container may fill up with water but this will not hurt the plant.
It can live underwater for months. If you grow your plant inside, you will need to feed it insects. A couple of flies are enough during the growing season. However, do not feed your Venus flytrap a hamburger! You might face some troubles and your plant will probably die.
I haven’t seen how my plant catches insects yet, but I once saw a fly half
melted in the trap.
1. What did the writer do for air circulation?
2. How much do you have to feed a Venus flytrap during the growing season?
What do you think about growing plants as a hobby?
page.67
Reading
My plant is growing well and an amazing thing happened this morning. I found
flower buds on my plants. Because of their scary image, I never imagined
carnivorous plants with flowers.
After your plant matures, it may produce flowers on a tall stem far above the leaves. The stem has to be high above the leaves so insects pollinating the flowers do not get trapped in the leaves.
Each flower produces very tiny seeds. They are about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. Plant the seeds right away or store them in a refrigerator.
I can’t wait to see what will happen to my Venus flytrap tomorrow!
1. What surprised the writer in the morning?
2. Why should the stem be high above the leaves?
What is your favorite flower? Why do you like it?

Extension
Carnivorous plants should NEVER be fertilized.
Carnivorous plants, like most plants, need fresh air, so DO NOT completely cover
the container.
The soil in which your carnivorous plants live should always be kept wet.
Most carnivorous plants require very bright light, almost full sunlight, but too
much heat should be avoided.
Carnivorous plants are not “Meat Eaters.”They eat insects. Do not try feeding
them meat.

Cats Bring Good Fortune!
It seems that the Japanese love cats. There are many cat-related stories in the Japanese culture. The most popular story is about Maneki Neko, also known as the Welcoming Cat or Money Cat.
In Tokyo, there is a temple called Goutokuji, which is the origin of the Maneki Neko. According to legend, one day the lord of Hikone was passing by the temple when he noticed a cat that was beckoning him from the gate of the temple. He followed the cat into the temple, and just then a bolt of lightning struck the place where he had been standing. The cat saved the lord’s life, and in return the lord donated a large amount of money to rescue the small temple from poverty.
Today, you will see hundreds of Maneki Neko statues at the entrance of Goutokuji. Many stores in Japan display the statue in hope to welcome many customers and bring in a lot of money. The statue can also be seen in houses to beckon personal happiness and good friends.
Q. What is true according to the passage?

Special Olympics is an organization which provides training and sports competitions for more than three million intellectually challenged athletes around the world. “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” This is the oath of Special Olympics. Switching between summer and winter, the Special Olympics World Games are held every two years. Here are some stories about Special Olympics and the Special Olympics World Games.

Camp Shriver, the Birth of a Global Movement
In the backyard of her home in Potomac, Maryland, Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a summer day camp, known as Camp Shriver. Shriver saw that people with intellectual challenges were being treated unfairly and children with special needs had no place to play. She believed when given the same opportunities and experiences as others, intellectually challenged people were far more capable than commonly assumed. In 1962, she put her belief into action by holding the first Camp Shriver annual event, where children with intellectual challenges explored their capabilities in a variety of sporting events. Camp Shriver continued until it was replaced by a larger, better organization, Special Olympics.
The History of Special Olympics
In 1968, Shriver was asked to hold an Olympic-like athletic competition, which became the first International Special Olympics Summer Games. The competition was held in July at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. “The Chicago Special Olympics will prove a very fundamental fact. The fact that exceptional children .....can be exceptional athletes. The fact that through sports they can realize their potential for growth,” Shriver said in her Opening Ceremony address.

 Supporters of Special Olympics
She also introduced the Special Olympics Training Program, a new national program that would offer people with intellectual challenges everywhere “the chance to play, the chance to compete, and the chance to grow.” In 1971, the United States Olympic Committee officially allowed Special Olympics to be one of only two organizations to use the name “Olympics” in the United States.
Finally, in 1988, Special Olympics was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee(IOC).
Supporters of Special Olympics
Special Olympics could not have succeeded without the commitment and passion of its millions of volunteers. These volunteers create lifetime friendships and great memories. Two important groups of volunteers, the coaches and spectators, support the athletes of Special Olympics. The job of the coaches is to help athletes be the best they can be. Coaches are not only role-models, but also leaders that help athletes find their own abilities. Just as important are the spectators who attend all
the events and cheer the athletes on for encouragement.

“I’m no longer a shy girl! Now I have many friends and feel confident about everything!”
Ann Chan has Down syndrome. As a child, she was shy and unconfident. When her mother realized that Ann was capable of figure skating, she encouraged Ann to learn how to skate and participate in figure skating programs. Ann liked skating and won a bronze medal at the 2004 Special Olympics Canada Ice-Skating Competition. In 2007, she became a member of the Hong Kong Special Olympics Skating team. At the 32nd Hong Kong Special Olympics Ice- Skating Competition in 2008, Ann won the gold medal, which qualified her to participate in the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games. After ten years of positive experiences from participating in the Special Olympics World Games, Ann became self-confident and much more active in competitions. She also got better at communicating with other people. Competition has taught her independence and improved all areas of her life. Currently, Ann is learning how to dance and play the piano. These activities improve her skating skills. Listening to her favorite song,
Ann says, “I really want to figure skate to this song!”

The Running Man From East Timor
“I want to run and run and run until the end of my life.”
Across the nation, East Timor has been involved in conflicts for more than 30 years to gain independence from Indonesia. In a war-torn country, people with intellectual challenges are often forgotten and abandoned.
Alcino Pereira, an intellectually challenged orphan from East Timor, who is unable to speak, and has never had access to health care. He can use one of his arms but only in a very limited way and walks with a limp. Despite these intellectual and physical challenges, he loves to run. In his worn-out shoes, Pereira runs every day in his home town of Dili. So he got his nickname, the “running man.”
In 2007, Alcino Pereira became the first athlete to represent East Timor in the
Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai, China. This made him an internationally famous celebrity. The Prime Minister, the Catholic Bishop, and the people of East Timor joined together to raise money to support his trip. Although Pereira did not win his long-distance race, all the spectators rose to their feet and cheered as he crossed the finish line. Returning to his country, he became a famous figure to help raise public awareness of intellectually challenged citizens in East Timor. Alcino Pereira is a good example of how a person participating in the World Games can be a good role-model for others, even if he or she is not a winner.

Today, I learned about Special Olympics and the Special Olympics World Games. At first, the two terms were a bit confusing to me, but I soon realized that Special Olympics is the name of the organization holding the Special Olympics World Games. Special Olympics was founded by Eunice Shriver who was shocked by the way people with intellectual challenges were treated. Eunice later invited the intellectually challenged children to
Camp Shriver so they can explore their capabilities. It paved the way for the first International Special Olympics Games held in Chicago. After learning about Special
Olympics and the Special Olympics World Games, I started to think about people with intellectual challenges and I’ve decided to be more friendly to them.

We’re Just Different Types of Normal!
Recently, I’ve learned about Special Olympics and the Special Olympics World Games. After researching some more, I learned there is also the Paralympics which is a sports competition for physically challenged athletes. This competition is held a few weeks after the regular Olympic Games, the famous sports competition for healthy athletes. Last week, I watched a video about Tanni Grey-Thomson, Britain’s most famous and successful Paralympics’ athlete. I was surprised to learn that she broke over 30 world records as a wheelchair athlete. Tanni began wheelchair racing at the age of 13 and won 11 gold medals in 16 years. Despite being in a wheelchair, she did what she wanted to do. She believed being born with physical difficulties did not play a big part in her life. I was deeply touched when she said, “We’re all normal. It’s just there are a lot of different types of normal.” I think that along with the Special Olympics World Games, the Paralympics also gives hope to all the “different types of normal” people.
Q. What is the passage mainly about?
a) a successful Paralympic athlete
b) the difficulties of Paralympic athletes
c) the history of various Olympic Games
d) the common events between Paralympics and Olympics
e) physically challenged athletes overcoming their weaknesses

Reading
The Red-Headed League
“The Red-Headed League”is one of the many detective stories about Sherlock Holmes written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Like Doyle’s other stories about Holmes, this story is told by Holmes’friend, Dr. John Watson. The setting is London, England, around 1890.
The Red-Headed Client’s Case
I called upon my friend, Sherlock Holmes, in his office in Baker Street. I found
him in conversation with a large man named Mr. Jabez Wilson. For me, there
was nothing remarkable about him except his red hair. But Holmes said, “I can
deduce the obvious fact that you have done a lot of writing lately.” Mr. Wilson
looked surprised, “How did you know that?” Holmes said, “Your right sleeve,
which you rest upon the desk is so shiny.”

Reading
Then the worried client continued his story. Mr. Wilson had a small pawnbroker’s business at Coburg Square, which earned him enough money to make a living. His assistant, Vincent Spaulding often went into the basement of the shop to develop photos, saying photography was his hobby.
About two months ago, Spaulding drew Wilson’s attention to an advertisement for an opening in the League of Red-Headed Men. According to Spaulding, the league was a foundation established by a curious and wealthy American to promote the interests of red-headed men. The American asked these men to perform small tasks but paid a high salary. Spaulding encouraged Wilson to apply, and together they went to the office listed in the advertisement.
The manager of the league, another red-headed man by the name of Duncan
Ross, promptly hired Wilson. Wilson’s job was to copy pages of the Encyclopedia
Britannica from ten in the morning until two in the afternoon. During those four
hours, he was forbidden to leave the office for any reason. Wilson worked there
for eight weeks and was paid well. Then suddenly the whole business came to an
end. On that morning he went to work and found a card pinned to the door,
which read: THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE IS DISSOLVED. Mr. Wilson said,
“Well, I want to know who played this trick on me, and why.”
“You were wise to come to me,” said Holmes. “How did you find the assistant
of yours?”
“I picked him because he was willing to work for half the wages.”
“What is he like?”
“Small, quick in his ways, no hair on his face, with an old cut above his eye.”
“That will do, Mr. Wilson. I think I can give you an opinion in a day or two.”

The Clean-Shaven Man in the Pawnshop
When our visitor had left us, with a pipe in his hand, Holmes sat with his eyes
closed, thinking the matter over. Then he suddenly sprang up with the movement
of a man who had just made up his mind. He asked me to accompany him to Coburg Square. We walked to the Square, where we found Mr. Wilson’s pawnshop. Holmes tapped vigorously on the pavement three times with his cane, and then knocked upon the door of the pawnshop. A clean-shaven man opened the door, and Holmes asked directions to the Strand. “Second right,” answered the assistant, closing the door.
I said, “I take it you asked your way in order that you might see him.”
“Not him,” said Holmes, “but the knees of his trousers.”
Holmes next led me around the corner to look at the row of businesses that
lined the back of Coburg Square. “Let me see,” said Holmes, “there are the
newspaper shop, the City and Suburban Bank, and the carriage station. And now,
Watson, we’ve done our work.”

In the Basement of the Bank
That night, I met up with Holmes in the company of two men-a Scotland Yard detective named Peter Jones and a bank manager named Mr. Merryweather.
Holmes said that they were about to arrest John Clay, a notorious criminal. The
four of us drove to the same row of businesses Holmes and I had seen earlier in
the day; then, we followed Mr. Merryweather into a huge basement. Getting down on his knees, Holmes began carefully looking at the stones in the floor of
the room with his lamp and a magnifying glass.
He then explained that we were in the basement of Mr. Merryweather’s bank,
where a large amount of gold was being stored. After we had waited for hours,
my eyes were suddenly caught by the light coming through a hole in the floor.
Then one of the stones turned over and left a hole. Over the edge appeared the
clean-shaven face of the pawnshop assistant, previously known as Vincent Spaulding, looking up as his two hands came out to pull himself up. He then reached down into the hole and drew up his red-haired companion. Suddenly Holmes caught the first intruder by the collar. The second dived down the hole.
“I have you now, John Clay,” said Holmes, “Your companion has no chance,
and there are three policemen waiting for him at the door.”
1. Why did Holmes ask the pawnshop assistant for directions?
2. What is the relationship between John Clay and Vincent Spaulding?

Holmes Solves the Mystery
Later Holmes told me how he had solved the mystery. “You see, Watson, the
only possible purpose of this fantastic business of the League was to get the
pawnbroker out of the way every day. When I heard that the assistant worked for
half the wages, I knew he had some secret motive.”
“But how did you guess what the motive was?”
“I thought of the assistant’s fondness for photography, and his trick of disappearing into the underground dark room. He was doing something down there that took many hours a day for months on end. I deduced that he was digging a tunnel to some other building. Meeting him confirmed this; for the worn, stained knees of his pants spoke of hours of digging. You’ll remember I tapped on the pavement with my cane and heard no sound echoing through the empty space. I then knew the tunnel led in the other direction. I saw the location of the bank, and felt I had solved the case.”
“You reasoned it out beautifully!” I cried.
“It saved me from boredom,” he answered.
1. What was the real purpose of the League?
2. How did Holmes figure out the assistant was digging a tunnel?
What do you think about Holmes’reasoning?

Extension
Hi Jason,
I hope this letter finds you well. Holmes and I were quite busy due to a recent criminal case involving the Red-Headed League. Let me tell you what happened.
After listening to the client’s story and observing things around him, Holmes collected clues to solve the mystery. Based on these clues, he made the hypothesis that a man named Spaulding was doing something else in the underground dark room. Then he visited Spaulding at the pawnshop. The stained knees of his pants proved Holmes’ hypothesis to be right: Spaulding was digging a tunnel. Tapping on the pavement with his cane however, he didn’t hear the sound he wanted. Then, with this new information, he supplemented his hypothesis. The tunnel must be in the other direction. No wonder that Holmes could arrest Spaulding in the basement of the bank.
When this kind of event happens again, I will write to you. Until then, take care.

Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White is the book I would like to introduce to you because it’s my favorite. The main characters are a little girl called Fern; a large grey spider, Charlotte; and a small, unhealthy pig named Wilbur. The little girl and the spider live on the farm and help save Wilbur from being eaten. I was impressed that Charlotte succeeded in writing words with her spider web celebrating the pig. As a result, the pig became famous and loved, and was awarded first place in a contest for wonderful animals. The novel seems to focus on the friendship between animals and humans. After I read the book, I wanted to be as brave and smart as Charlotte. From now on, I won’t be afraid of a spider as much as I used to be. In a word, the book is great fun from start to finish.

Hair’s Colorful History
Historically, there has always been bias and suspicion about red-headed people such as the belief that people with red hair have hot tempers. Wrong or not, this image most likely stems from the fact that Scots came from the Celts, who were known to be violent. Since the Scots have a high percentage of red-heads, people believe red-heads were violent, too. Even in literature, this bias about red-haired people could be seen. In Anne of Green Gables, a character describes Anne Shirley, a red-headed girl, as “having a temper that matches her hair.” It is believed that red hair first appeared in the Dark Ages as the result of a birth defect. People with red hair at that time were thought of as witches because they had an unnatural hair
color. However, it was not all bad. Certain British people believed that King Arthur had red hair, and that a red-haired leader would come to lead the country in times of trouble. In the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth the First had natural red hair which made red hair more acceptable, and soon after red hair became a popular color for women.
Q. Which of the following is true based on the passage?
a) Red-heads are considered fun people.
b) Scots have a high percent of red-haired people.
c) In the Dark Ages, the red-haired people were mostly smart.
d) The story that King Arthur was a red-haired proved wrong.
e) Queen Elizabeth changed her hair color to red.

Invented in the period of the Three Kingdoms, the seokbinggo was used as a
“natural” refrigerator by our ancestors until the invention of the modern refrigerator. When you go inside the seokbinggo on a warm day, you’ll feel a
significant temperature drop.
The seokbinggo was a remarkable technological invention that had several clever devices to screen itself from the heat. First, the underground structure of the seokbinggo helped keep a low temperature inside. Further, its floor, walls, and ceiling were made of granite, which cooled off the heat well. The most notable feature of the seokbinggo was the ceiling. The seokbinggo was designed to make warm air gather into its hollow part and leave the storage through the ceiling which had ventilating holes with tiny roofs to keep the rain from entering inside.
One of the most useful purposes of the seokbinggo was to store ice. When a
nearby river froze in the winter, ice was collected and stored in it. The ice was used to keep food offerings fresh for important ceremonial services. Sometimes,
the ice was also shared with the sick and elderly, as well as high-ranking officials.

Angbuilgu, a Unique Clock From the Joseon Dynasty
The angbuilgu was a movable sundial that people used to accurately tell time during the Joseon Dynasty. It was developed by three scientists- Jang Yeongsil, Lee Cheon, and Kim Jo- in the 16th year of King Sejong’s reign (1434). A small stick at the center of the angbuilgu created a shadow which moved as the sun rose and set. The shadow pointed to a certain time marking on the angbuilgu which showed the time of day. The angbuilgu also showed 24 periods of the solar calendar year by measuring the length of a shadow changing across seasons.
King Sejong’s love for his people was reflected in this invention. He portrayed
the pictures of 12 animals on the angbuilgu which greatly helped his illiterate people check the corresponding time of a day. The 12 pictures indicated by the shadow easily showed them what part of a day they were in. For use by common people, King Sejong kindly put the sundial in front of Jongmyo and on the Hyejeong Bridge in the downtown area of Jongno, as well as in the royal court.
1. How did the angbuilgu show 24 periods of the solar calendar year?
2. What did King Sejong do for his illiterate people?
What problems would we face without clocks?

Geobukseon, the World's First Ironclad Warship
The geobukseon is the first ironclad warship in the world. Under the direction
of Admiral Yi Sunsin, the geobukseon proved an important instrument for winning battles at sea, showing great power and mobility. What makes this ship such an excellent scientific achievement?
It was specially designed so sailors could see their enemies outside while they
remained invisible. Unlike other warships, the geobukseon had its gunports stationed not only along its sides, but also at the head and tail of the ship. This allowed sailors to fire cannons from all sides of the ship with great accuracy and flexibility of range. Moreover, during battles, the spikes on the roof were hidden with straw mats so unsuspecting enemies would get hurt if they tried to board the ship. The geobukseon still remains a wonder among warship building specialists.

Jikjisimcheyojeol, a Revolution in Publishing
The first movable metal type print in the world was invented during the Goryeo Dynasty. This invention made it possible to print a great volume of books quickly. Before it was invented, wooden block printing was the common method to publish books, but it could only print limited books in limited runs.
Jikji, a collection of Buddhist teachings, is the oldest book printed by the movable metal type. It was published in 1377 in Heungdeok temple, 78 years before the famous 42-line Bible was published by Gutenberg in Europe.
UNESCO confirmed that Jikji was the oldest book printed with the use of movable metal type. On September 4th, 2001, Jikji was registered in the “Memory of the World Prize” by this organization.
1. Why were the spikes on the roof of the geobukseon hidden with the straw mats?
2. What is the major difference between movable metal type print and wooden block printing?
What do you think the best part of the geobukseon is?

Welcome to the annual special exhibition of the National Museum, Finding the
History of Korean Science. Today we are proudly presenting historical remains to
prove the deep-rooted tradition of Korean science. Please take a look at the screen.
Can you guess what this was used for? This is an ancient refrigerator, the seokbinggo.
It was used to keep ice frozen until the invention of electricity centuries later. How
could it keep a low temperature? The secret lies in its scientific structure. For example, the ceiling of the seokbinggo was designed to make warm air gather into its hollow part and leave the storage through the ventilating holes. The seokbinggo was also covered with grass to keep the heat away. Isn’t it amazing that this structure was created such a long time ago? If you want to experience how ancient Koreans used the storage, you can visit the annual ice storage festival, Andong Jangbingje.

An Ancient Way to Store Ice in the Desert
By 400 BC, Persian people mastered skills for storing ice during hot summers. Large amounts of ice were carried during the winter months from nearby mountains to many cities built in the desert. Then the ice was put in deep holes called Yakhchal. These ancient refrigerators were used primarily for storing ice and food in the hot, dry desert weather of Persia. The ice was used to make a traditional Persian frozen dessert, called faloodeh, which was served to the king and his family on the hottest days of summer.
Above ground, the dome-shaped structure is made up of large, mud bricks piled upon each other, rising as high as 60 feet, which covered underground spaces as large as 5,000m2. The inside of the dome had a Qanat that pushed the hot air out and pulled the very cold air down around the ice and food. This system easily managed to keep temperatures inside the Yakhchal near freezing even when desert temperatures were well above 30°C.
Q. What is the main topic of the passage?
a) the mystery about an ancient Persian dome
b) a popular icy dessert for ancient Persian people
c) the leisure life of Persian people in the hot desert
d) the hardship the Persians had while building a Yakhchal

TV, A Double-Edged Sword
.Moderator: Mr. Ahn
.Proposition Team: Minji, Jiho
.Opposition Team: Homin, Sora
Mr. Ahn: Welcome to the Hanguk High School Debate Club. Today, we are going to debate on the topic, “Does TV do more good than harm?” The debate will be between two teams of two students each. The Proposition team will begin by presenting their case in favor of television. The Opposition team will try to disprove the Proposition’s arguments before building their own case. Both teams will take turns supporting their positions with evidence and directly questioning the opposing team through cross-examinations. Now, let’s listen to the opening statement from the Proposition team.
Minji: Thank you, Mr. Ahn. Hello, everyone. I am here to argue that TV does more
good than harm. I think TV helps people relax. We live in a very competitive society and people often feel stressed. Watching TV is an easy way to relax after
a hard day. Personally, I study at the school library until ten o’clock at night, which makes me exhausted and stressed out. To relieve stress and relax before going to
bed, I often watch popular soap operas or variety shows.
1. What will the Opposition team do before building their case?
2. What is Minji’s opinion about watching TV?
Why do you watch TV?
page.156
Reading
Mr. Ahn: The Proposition insisted that TV plays an important role in relieving stress. Now it is time to hear the Opposition’s side.
Homin: Thank you, Mr. Ahn. The Opposition believes that watching a particular TV
program does not ease one’s mind, but distracts students with thoughtless entertainment. Many teenagers become overly excited about the lives of celebrities
and spend too much time watching their favorite celebrities on TV. This interrupts
their studies, which not only harms their academic performance in high school, but
also hurts their chances for getting into a university.
Minji: Poor academic performance is not because of TV. It is because of the students’ poor will.
Homin: Thank you for pointing out that teenagers are not strong enough to control
themselves. Teenagers are vulnerable to contents of mass media. That is the main
point of our second argument. Youngsters who watch violent TV programs are
more inclined to show violent tendencies. Watching TV can make children and
teens more violent.
Mr. Ahn: The Opposition stated that TV is responsible for youngsters’ violence. Now let’s hear what the Proposition thinks about this.
Jiho: We think TV should not be blamed for violent behavior. According to some
theories, everyone is born with violent tendencies, but people can learn to control
them as they grow older. Those who don’t learn self-control are the ones who
become violent.
1. What is the main point of the second argument raised by Homin?
2. What does Jiho think is responsible for children’s violence?
What distracts you most when studying?
page.157
Reading
Homin: Even if TV does not provoke children into committing a crime, isn’t it still true that violence on TV has a bad influence on children?
Jiho: You know some movies are rated “R,” meaning “restricted” to those under 18. In a similar way, the government rates TV programs to protect children and help
parents decide what is safe and unsafe to watch. Some television sets even have a
control function that parents can use to choose which shows can be seen. Now, let me move on to another point. TV is good for social interaction because it provides common topics for people to discuss their opinions. For example, one billion people watched the 2010 World Cup and four billion people watched the 2012 Olympics. Watching these games on TV united not only a nation but the world.
Sora: Yes, sporting events can unite people, but not everyone watches them on TV.
Many people today enjoy them through the Internet or smart phones. Crowds do
not gather to watch TV all the time. They only do it once every two or four years
for those big sporting events you mentioned.
Jiho: But watching the same TV programs is good for social interaction because people talk about them for a while. Sporting events are not the only programs that people watch together. There are many other TV programs that people around the world share an interest in, such as soap operas, reality shows and comedies. These
programs reflect common issues that anyone can relate to.
Sora: I can’t agree with you on that last point. Let’s use conversations between
teenagers as an example. After watching TV, teenagers often make comments like,
“The new song released by such and such group was awesome” or “Last night’s
show was fantastic.” They rarely talk about global issues, nor speak out on
important everyday concerns.
page.158
Reading
Mr. Ahn: Okay, teams. Both sides gave good speeches. Now, are there any other
arguments supporting TV’s harms or benefits?
Sora: We, the Opposition, believe that TV limits how people see the world by
controlling the information provided. Producers often choose and broadcast issues
from their points of view. They also show programs which they think most people
want to see. And it is impossible to show all sides of a story with two-minutes of
news.
Jiho: We, the Proposition, disagree. People are conscious beings and they can choose which programs to watch or avoid. All the news programs in a country do not show the same news stories in the same way. Also, satellite TV allows programs from various regions to be broadcasted around the world. This gives people a chance to see stories in ways that differ from their local news programs. The variety of information is a real benefit because it allows people to understand many sides of a story and discuss those points of view with others. In short, TV enables the spread of information and opinions on important political and social issues, thus encouraging individuals to participate more actively in society.
1. What aspect did Sora point out to support her team?
2. According to Jiho, how does a variety of information benefit people?
Which media do you use most as a source of information? Why?
page.159
Reading
Mr. Ahn: Good, both arguments are strong and well organized. Let’s move on to the
closing speeches, beginning with the Proposition.
Minji: TV is our window to the world and a smart friend. It makes people think and talk about things outside their daily lives. TV also relaxes people with entertaining programs and unites them with sport competitions and news from around the world. The harms pointed out by the Opposition team are actually caused by individual weakness and are not the fault of TV. In conclusion, our team strongly believes that TV does more good than harm. Thank you.
Mr. Ahn: Thank you, Minji. Now it is time for the Opposition to offer the last speech of today’s debate.
Homin: Teenagers cannot help but keep watching TV despite the fact it interrupts their studies because they don’t have enough self-control. Also, young people are
affected by the violence they see on TV and may mimic those crimes. Lastly, TV
limits how people see the world because the information is controlled by media.
Considering all these negative aspects, the Opposition team believes that TV does
more harm than good. Thank you.
Mr. Ahn: This was a good debate. I want to thank all the debaters and audience for your participation. As you know, TV is a double-edged sword, resulting in both good and harmful effects. Now I would like all of you to think carefully about what the speakers have said and decide your position on this issue.

Mr. Ahn: Now, the debate is over. Let’s listen to some opinions from the audience. Raise your hand and give us your opinion about watching TV.
Terry: I agree with the Opposition team. These days, many teenagers are spending too much time in front of the TV and becoming couch potatoes. A few days ago, I saw the news reporting the rate of overweight children keeps increasing because of TV. Children used to run and play around in the fields and streets, but now TV has kept them inside.
Sylvia: Personally, I’m in favor of the Proposition team. TV helps people relax, but more importantly it can also make them motivated. Now, there are many good TV programs on air. Among them, I enjoy watching reality-competition programs the most. While watching those programs, I become so touched and motivated by the participants doing their best to achieve their dreams. Thus, I strongly believe that TV is good for us.
Read the follow-up discussion to the debate and answer the questions.

C. Write your opinions on the topic referring to the sample.
Today, we are debating “All schools should have surveillance cameras.” I strongly agree with this statement. To support my position, I’d like to put forward two important points. First of all, having surveillance cameras will help prevent thefts. If we have many cameras watching the school all the time, thieves are less likely to break in. Secondly, it can greatly help in decreasing school violence. If students know their behavior is being watched, they may be less likely to behave badly. Considering these aspects, I strongly suggest that we put up surveillance cameras in school.

M: Hello, everyone. Today we are debating “Eating only vegetables is much better for us.” We agree with this proposition for several reasons. First of all, we should know that eating vegetables is good for our health. They are low in calories, and most are fat free. Also, vegetables are easier to digest than meat, contain many important vitamins, and even reduce the risk of cancer. Eating vegetables is helpful in protecting the environment as well. Growing vegetables does not harm the
environment, but it’s impossible to raise animals without harming the environment. For these reasons, I believe eating only vegetables is much better for us.

Young at Heart!
Have you ever imagined yourself in your sixties? You might picture gray-haired,
wrinkle-faced seniors baby-sitting grandchildren or walking dogs in the park.
However, more and more elderly people refuse to lead a typical, relaxing life
when they retire. Instead, they choose to challenge themselves to reach their full
potential both mentally and physically, and are involved in their communities as actively as young people. Here are three stories about the “Shiny Silver” generation. Their amazing passion will encourage you to change your biases against old people.
Never Too Late to Dance!
“ When I do ballet, I feel like a young woman!”
Wearing a close-fitting ballet suit and lightcolored ballet shoes, Lee Poh Ying warms up in front of the glass-wall of the dancing room. Lee is not a typical young ballet student. She is a Singaporean woman in her late sixties, trying to
stay fit and active in a quickly aging society. Learning ballet was Lee’s lifelong dream, but it took her decades before she finally had the time to achieve it. In her retirement, she dances with other adult students at a community center every Sunday morning. She enjoys it very much, “I like ballet a lot. It makes me extremely happy. I will continue dancing until I cannot dance any longer.”
page. 178
Reading
In 2003, Lee and a group of elderly women approached Yu Shu Huai, a ballet
teacher, and asked if he could help them learn ballet. He agreed and started
classes with six students. Now he has more than 40 students. Yu knew learning
ballet would not be easy for elderly women because they had to deal with health
problems and fear of failure. To cater to this group, he came up with dance
moves that allow mature students to enjoy the unique characteristics of ballet
without causing any physical harm.
Ballet definitely gives benefits to these seniors even though their age sometimes limits them from dancing perfectly. Most of them say their bodies are more flexible and stronger after starting the classes. They also feel more confident and younger than ever before. One student said, “Ballet is not just one of my many free time activities. It’s the one that allowed me to achieve my lifelong wish. I now feel like I can do anything!”
1. What did Yu Shu Huai do to cater to his students?
2. What kinds of benefits do the seniors get by taking ballet lessons?
If you were old, what kind of lessons would you like to take?

Don’t Worry! Just Keep Running!
“ If someone says I must stop running I ignore them . without exception, they’re all younger than me!”
Do you know the age of the oldest person to run and finish a marathon? You might guess sixty or seventy. Surprisingly, the answer is at least 100 years old. In 2011, Fauja Singh from London became the first centenarian to complete a marathon. Singh finished the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 8 hours, 25 minutes and 17 seconds. This was his eighth marathon but it will not be his last.
Singh is well known among marathon runners. He already holds the title for the fastest marathoner aged 90 or over. He achieved this in 2003 at the age of 92.

Despite being born on April 1, 1911, his achievements are no April Fool’s
joke. Singh is truly a healthy 100-year-old grandfather. He started running when
he was 89, to overcome great sadness after his wife and son died. Since then,
Singh runs at least 16 kilometers every day. He once said that the key to his
great health is being positive and stress-free. “Be thankful for everything you
have,” he added. He has also credited ginger curry and cups of tea for his
success as one of the oldest marathoners in the world.

Lee’s veterinarian practice was once very successful. But when the cattle industry slowed down, Lee had to consider retirement. Hot Items for Seniors!
People like to have their own special things, and elderly people are no exception.
Today more and more products for the elderly are sold in the world markets. Companies with hot items follow a very simple rule for success: . Companies either add new functions to products or develop completely new ones depending on the customers’ needs. For example, in America, long-handled toenail clippers were made to help people with back problems. In Japan, specially designed silicon lids for bottled drinks have freed seniors with weak hands from worrying about spilling water while drinking. Seniors can enjoy drinks even when lying on the bed. “Bone Guard” is another product that meets the needs of seniors. It is a popular underwear in Japan that protects seniors’ bones from breaking during a fall. Good-looking products are important, too. French seniors are willing to buy hearing aids which look like earrings despite their high prices. As the elderly population increases, brighter ideas are put into practice to make their lives happier.
